THE CZECH RETAIL MARKET CONSOLIDATES

The consolidation of the Czech retail market continues. In the toy retail business, Wormelen Group, that operates Sparkys toys, acquired the company Alltoys that runs the chain Bambule. Other consolidations could follow in the DIY market. Retailer demand remains robust in prime locations on the Prague high street as well as the top shopping centres in Prague and the regions. New openings in Q2 2015 include the first franchise of Jeff de Bruges truffles and Kusmi Tea in Nový Smíchov, showing increasing importance of the food and delicatessen offer in shopping centres. Seasonally adjusted retail sales grew by 6.6%. Traditionally, the strongest rise in sales was recorded from e-commerce (23.1%), food retail sales grew by 2.4% and clothing & footwear recorded a rise of 1.7%.

No major retail schemes were completed in H1 2015 and for the remainder of the year also only smaller retail parks could be delivered. Both awaited outlet centres, The Prague Outlet and Bohemia Outlet Village, postponed their completion dates into 2016. Thus three outlet centres could open next year with Outlet Arena Moravia in Ostrava by TK Development (10,000 sq m) completing the list.  The 2016 supply pipeline should exceed 100,000 sqm including Aupark Koruna in Hradec Králové (25,900 sqm) by HB Reavis, the refurbishment and extension of Prior Přerov and Centrál Jablonec nad Nisou by Crestyl (13,000 sqm).
