Consumer Sentiment is tranding upwards

Consumer sentiment has improved steadily during the course of 2013 and is trending towards the long-term average. Since the end of Q1, the European consumer confidence indicator has moved up 4.1 points. Some of the most significant rises were seen in southern European countries and sentiment rose most sharply in those markets that have plagued by struggling economics and high unemployment, most notably in Italy which saw a 17 points rise, but consumer confidence also increased in Spain (6.3 points) and Greece (4 points). Retailer confidence, on the other hand, has actually weakened since the end of last quarter, falling by 27 points. Retailers have been exercising control in their expansion activity across most markets and this was reflected in their slightly more negative confidence levels over the last quarter. With further administrations in 2013 such as Modelzone, HMV and Republic in the UK, Virgin Megastores in France, FNAC and Blockbuster in Italy, it is unsurprising that retailer confidence is wavering.
