Global Consumers feel the pinch

Household spending around the world has benefitted from three powerful tailwinds in 2014-2016 namely cheap money and low debt servicing burdens, cheaper energy and second round effects via transport costs and recovering labour markets shifting millions of unemployed into work. These have boosted households’ disposable income and enabled consumer spending to be a key driver of global economic recovery. But moving into 2017, all three of these tailwinds are turning into headwinds. Higher interest rates in the US will spill over across much of the world. Energy is becoming more expensive, doubly so when priced in local currency. Job creation will slow, either due to lack of spare manpower or as employers worry about economic and political outlook. Upshot is that global consumer spending power will grow at the slowest rate this year since 2009.
